How To Create And Use Open Questions In Math Class

By Marian Small

If you’ve heard about open questions and have wanted to try them but aren’t sure how to get started, then this is the mini workshop for you. It’ll help you feel more confident using them with your students as well as creating your own open questions or adjusting ones you find.

We’ll begin by exploring why we should even be using open questions in math and why math isn’t just about getting answers to problems. Then we’ll talk about implementation including how you can use open questions to manageably differentiate instruction for all students, not just those that struggle. Next, we’ll discuss what to do after students answer the initial open question you present. Finally, we’ll share strategies for getting students and parents comfortable with open questions as well as how to turn your existing closed questions into open questions.
